Directions • What's better than a brand-new trail?
The latest section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, the system that winds through Salt Lake County and is envisioned as one day running from the Idaho border to Nehpi, was just completed late last summer.
It starts at the Mount Olympus Trailhead, which is located on Wasatch Boulevard in Holladay right near the 4500 South exit on Interstate 215. Go up the steep wooden stairs, then cut left about a half-mile in, away from the Mount Olympus sign. A sign for the BST appears a little way in.
The trail is exposed to the west, which is perfect for spring hiking but could get hot in the summer. It winds behind the Olympus Cove trailhead, presenting some beautiful views of the valley and snow-capped mountains in the distance. The scrub oak-lined path eventually joins up with the Z trail, where terrain grows a little more alpine and you may encounter some snow. After the initial ascent, the elevation gain isn't too serious, but will still get your heart pounding. There is a bit of steep drop-off on the side of the trail in spots — something to watch for if you're hiking with children.
