A Canyons School District bus went up in flames Monday morning, but no injuries were reported.

District spokeswoman Jennifer Toomer-Cook said the fire occurred just before 7 a.m. near 9400 South and 500 West. The driver had just begun his route to pick up children attending Mount Jordan Middle School.

The driver, who had not yet picked up any children, pulled over when he noticed smoke coming from the front of the bus. He attempted to douse the ensuing flames with an on-board fire extinguisher but was forced to leave the vehicle and call for help.

The fire heavily damaged the bus before Unified Fire crews could extinguish it.

Toomer-Cook said the driver not only was uninjured, he drove a replacement bus to pick up his passengers.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
