The Carbon County sheriff is under investigation for allegedly using county equipment and a county credit card to move to his new home, county officials said.
Sheriff James Cordova, who has held the office since 1999, has not filed to run for re-election and bought a house in St. George several months ago. About six weeks ago, citizens started calling county officials, prompting an investigation into whether Cordova used county equipment and the credit card in his move to St. George, said county Commissioner Jae Potter on Thursday.
Carbon County Attorney Gene Strate said his office is investigating allegations that Cordova spent about $2,100 on the credit card to purchase fuel for the county-owned pickup truck.
Strate said the final investigative report will be reviewed by either the Utah Attorney General's Office or prosecutors in another county for possible charges.
In the meantime, Cordova has not been placed on administrative leave. His term runs through the rest of the calendar year.
Cordova could not immediately be reached for comment.
