Beijing • China's Cabinet office for the Internet says it will step up scrutiny of information technology products for possible security flaws.
Thursday's announcement comes amid tensions between Beijing and Washington over U.S. criminal charges of cyber spying leveled against five Chinese military officers.
The government's Xinhua News Agency said government experts will scrutinize products and services to be used for national security and other public interests. It gave no details of how the examination would be conducted.
Xinhua said the inspections would apply to both foreign and Chinese products. It said makers of products that fail the examination would be barred from selling them in China.
An official spokesman was quoted as saying Chinese government agencies, universities, companies and other entities have suffered extensive intrusions and information theft.
