Jason Isbell
Show of the week • In 2001, at age 22, guitarist and alt-country songwriter Jason Isbell met the band Drive-By Truckers at a party and ended up joining the band, with two days to learn all its songs. The collaboration lasted six years, with Isbell contributing songs along with founding members Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley. In 2007, Isbell left the band and went solo, honoring his Alabama roots by recording at the F.A.M.E. Studios in Muscle Shoals, and assembling musicians there for his backup band, The 400 Unit. He's currently touring to support his fourth studio album, "Southeastern." Fans are known to react rapturously to Isbell's music, though the Red Butte audience will have to come up with something big to outdo what happened during his set at the New Orleans Jazz Fest in April: A couple got engaged during the performance of his ballad "Cover Me Up." Opening act: The Lone Bellow.
