The Salt Lake Valley's moviegoing center of gravity is shifting west.

The Wasatch Front's newest movie theater, the Cinemark West Valley, opens Thursday night with new releases "22 Jump Street" and "How to Train Your Dragon 2" — and a full slate of films on Friday.

The new theater — at 2573 S. 5370 West in West Valley's High Market development — boasts 10 auditoriums, each with bright digital projection, comfortable high-backed seats and wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling screens. The largest auditorium is one of Cinemark's XD theaters, with 60 surround-sound speakers and a massive screen.

James Meredith, Cinemark's vice president for marketing and communications, said the theater is one of the Texas-based chain's "NextGen" theaters, "which is a fancy way for us to say it has all the customer-preferred options and latest technology."

The opening brings Cinemark's presence in Utah up to 16 multiplexes with an even 200 first-run and second-run screens from Provo to Ogden.
