A Layton intersection less than a mile south of Hill Air Force Base was shut down after a passerby called 911 to report what looked like a pipe bomb.
Layton police Sgt. Kyle Schroeder said officers and bomb experts rushed to the scene, the southwest corner of Antelope Drive and Hill Field Road, at 8:45 p.m. Monday.
"[The item] did appear suspicious, and the area was secured. Traffic was redirected on all sides of the intersection, pedestrians were cleared from the area and surrounding businesses closed," Schroeder stated.
Bomb experts used X-ray imaging before determining the item was not a bomb, but an otherwise unspecified "mechanical" item.
"It does not appear that this item was constructed purposefully to represent an explosive device. Furthermore, there is no information to indicate it was placed to cause concern for the public," Schroeder said.
Traffic was allowed to resume normally through the intersection at 10:25 p.m. Monday.
