A hiker who was reported missing was found dead Saturday morning in the White Pine area of Little Cottonwood Canyon.

The hiker, Andrew Sharp, 35, appears to have died in a fall, the Unified Police Department says.

Sharp asked a friend in a text message sent about noon Friday to pick him up at 2:30 p.m. that day at the White Pine Trailhead, UPD Lt. Justin Hoyal said. The friend called police when Sharp — who was hiking alone and whose vehicle was found in the Albion Basin area — didn't show up.

UPD officers and the Utah Department of Public Safety, which sent up a helicopter, searched the area until dark on Friday and resumed looking Saturday, when they found the hiker about 7 a.m. Sharp's body has been taken to the Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy, Hoyal said.

Sharp lived in the Salt Lake Valley, UPD reported in a tweet.
