Draper • What a difference a year makes.
In last season's private versus public battle of Draper, Juan Diego ruined Corner Canyon's first game in history.
It was a much different story Friday night, as the Chargers dominated the Soaring Eagle 41-3 in a bitterly contested contest that may be the last between the schools in quite a while.
The game played mostly under a driving rainstorm featured a long lightning delay and some bad blood between Corner Canyon coach Don Eck and his Juan Diego counterpart, John Colosimo.
Something was said at halftime and the two veteran coaches began jawing at each other. It continued before the second half started and ended with the two still exchanging words.
To show the bitterness of the rivalry, Juan Diego elected to have kicker Joel Bruder boot a field goal as time expired to prevent the Chargers from earning a shutout. The Soaring Eagle celebrated as if they had won a state title, while Corner Canyon players shouted back and pointed at the scoreboard.
The reality, though, was this was never much of a game. From the first series, it was obvious that the senior-dominated Class 4A Chargers had too much speed and talent for Juan Diego, a 3AA power, to handle.
It was 10-0 at the quarter and 27-0 at half.
Only a number of penalties by Corner Canyon even kept it that close.
Riley Ogden did much of the damage, running for 220 yards and two touchdowns. His running back cohort, Tyson Rogers, added two touchdowns and 80 yards, while quarterback Mike Ebeling ran for 160 yards, threw for a touchdown and kicked two field goals.
On defense, Charger Gaige Kartchner recorded six sacks as Corner Canyon dominated all evening.
It remains to be seen if the Chargers can compete with 4A powers Timpview and East, but they definitely looked like they could be one of the stronger teams in that classification this season. —
