Jeff Cassar's wallet is about to be thinned a bit. How much? We don't know.

Major League Soccer's Disciplinary Committee announced Wednesday that Real Salt Lake's first-year head coach was fined an undisclosed amount for "improper bench behavior" in the 90th minute of RSL's 2-1 loss at Vancouver on Sept. 27.

Referee Alan Chapman awarded two penalty kicks to the Whitecaps Saturday evening. The first attempt — in the final minute of stoppage time in the first half — was taken by Vancouver's Pedro Morales, but was stopped by RSL goalkeeper Jeff Attinella.

The second PK came in the 62nd minute, but Morales' attempt pulled even with RSL after defender Nat Borchers gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute with a headed goal off a corner kick. Morales later scored the game-winner for the Caps.

"I'm not pleased about it. I'm just not pleased about it," Cassar said post-game about the penalty calls. "Obviously, we put ourselves in those positions, but I'm not pleased. Really disappointed. It's tough enough to go on the road and try to get a result, but it's even tougher when you've got two PK calls against you."

Per an RSL team spokesman, Cassar and the club will not seek to appeal the fine from MLS.

Sabo gets the call

Four months after a foot fracture dashed his dreams of playing in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, RSL forward Alvaro Saborio is returning to La Sele. The 32-year-old Costa Rican international and RSL's all-time leading scorer was announced to be included in Los Ticos' plans for upcoming friendlies at Oman on Oct. 10 and later at South Korea on Oct. 14. He sat and watched as Costa Rica's storybook run in the World Cup went through to the quarterfinals where it lost to the Netherlands 4-3 in a penalty shootout.

Saborio tweeted his return to Costa Rica's national team Wednesday afternoon.

Feliz por volver a #LaSele

Saborio has 75 career goals across all competitions since joining RSL in 2010. He has seven goals and two assists in 13 games played in 2014 after missing 19 regular-season matches due to the foot fracture sustained in late May. In his first game back with RSL since May 11, Saborio scored the game-winning goal vs. FC Dallas on Sept. 6, just 13 seconds after running onto the pitch as a substitute. He joins fellow forward Joao Plata — RSL's leading goal-scorer in 2014 with 13 goals — as October international call-ins. The 22-year-old Plata was called in by Ecuador for their upcoming friendlies against the United States men's national team on Oct. 10 in East Hartford, Conn., and again against El Salvador on Oct. 14 in East Harrison, N.J.

The USMNT and coach Jurgen Klinsmann have yet to announce the rosters for upcoming friendlies against Ecuador and Honduras on Oct. 14 in Boca Raton, Fla., but chances remain RSL could be further thinned with Nick Rimando, Kyle Beckerman and potentially Luis Gil being tabbed. The U.S. U-23's have a camp in Brazil during that FIFA window that could take Gil, who recently captained the U-23's in a 5-1 win at the Bahamas, away from RSL briefly.

Playoff scenarios abound

A draw at Vancouver would have sealed RSL's seventh-consecutive MLS Cup playoff appearance. The 1-0 road lead eventually turned into a 2-1 loss, leaving RSL looking to Sunday's match at Chivas USA where a win over the worst team in MLS punches RSL's ticket to the dance.

But RSL doesn't need three points in order to get in this weekend. The playoff spot can, theoretically, be wrapped up and under the three before RSL gets to StubHub Center Sunday afternoon.

A Vancouver loss to FC Dallas at home Saturday gets RSL in, as does a Portland loss or draw at San Jose.
