Just bad luck. That's how BYU football coach Bronco Mendenhall described the team's injury situation when he met with reporters this morning for his weekly press briefing. Mendenhall is not scheduled to talk to the media again until after Saturday night's 8:15 p.m. game at LaVell Edwards Stadium against Nevada. Mendenhall didn't have an injury report, instead referring all questions to BYU football spokesperson Brett Pyne, who gets information from head athletic trainer Steve Pincock and passes it along to us. "It is pretty long. So I am not sure who is in, who is not in. Quite frankly, we are just going with whoever can play, and not making a big deal about it. But it is pretty long," Mendenhall said. The latest Cougar to suffer a season-ending injury is cornerback Jordan Johnson. The senior had surgery Friday morning on his broken arm, and a plate and screws were inserted. It appears that Johnson's football career is over. Here's more from Pyne's list: * Safety Craig Bills is following concussion protocol and is "doing fine, from what I've been told. I haven't heard any problems with that so far." * Running back Jamaal Williams has a sprained ankle but is progressing well and is "probable" for Saturday. * Safety Dallin Leavitt's situation is similar to Williams' situation. * Running back/kick returner Adam Hine has an ankle sprain but Pyne didn't have an exact report on Hine's status. * Linebacker Alani Fua has a sprained ankle and is questionable (not as close to playing as Williams and Leavitt). * Offensive lineman Brayden Kearsley has ankle issues and is similar to Fua in terms of progress.* Receiver Jordan Leslie was in and out of Thursday's game and is dealing with an ankle but should be able to play vs. Nevada. * Offensive lineman De'Ondre Wesley also missed some time vs. UCF but should be good to go vs. Nevada. * Reporters forgot to ask about receiver Terenn Houk, who missed the UCF game with a neck injury. I asked Mendenhall why the Cougars have had so many sprained ankles this year. "It is a really good question," he said. "At one point we had 10, and that number has gone up, so we have had commonalities. They have happened mostly in games. Trainers are researching it, trying to find out what the answer is. But really, there's not much commonality other than most of them being rolled up on by someone else right now. Very few of them out in the open." Mendenhall said a pair of true freshmen, Fred Warner and Sione Takitaki, played well Thursday while replacing Fua. Kaimana Nacua played well relieving Bills, Mendenhall said. " Then you have three of the starting four in the secondary were out for that game, and Skye PoVey came in, even though he is not a new player, he came in and played really well. So I thought our defense played much better, and improved, in that game," Bronco said. BYU released its depth chart for Nevada on Monday afternoon, and sophomore Michael Davis is listed as the starting field corner, to be backed up by Robertson Daniel. However, Daniel is listed as the starting boundary corner, to be backed up by Jordan Preator. I figured Trenton Trammell would make the two-deep after Johnson's injury, but it didn't happen. Mitch Mathews and Jordan Leslie are still listed as the starting outside receivers, backed up by Kurt Henderson and Devon Blackmon. Mitchell Juergens is listed as the starting H-back, backed up by freshman Trey Dye. Houk "Or" Colby Pearson, who caught his first touchdown pass against UCF, are listed as the starters at inside receiver. Where is senior Ross Apo, you might ask. Mendenhall said Apo is healthy, just buried on the depth chart. "Ross just has to continue to fight and scrap and claw his way into the mix. We are all hopeful that happens," Mendenhall said. In another BYU football-related note that came out Monday, ESPN announced that it will televise the Oct. 24 BYU-at-Boise State game on the blue turf at Albertson's Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. MT for that Friday night game.
