Connie Coyne, The Salt Lake Tribune's reader advocate, was honored Friday night by the Utah chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists with the organization's Quintus C. Wilson Ethics Award for her work standing up for readers and teaching young journalists how to navigate the ethical dilemmas encountered when gathering news.
Coyne writes a Saturday column in The Tribune, addressing readers' questions and concerns. She joined the newspaper in 1993 as a copy editor, and has worked as the weekend editor, a general assignment reporter, and an editorial writer. She became the reader advocate in 2003. She also is an adjunct professor in the University of Utah's communications department, teaching introduction to news writing. Her newspaper career includes stints at the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel and the Chicago Sun-Times.
Tribune staffers took nine top awards and 36 awards overall in the annual contest of Utah news media. The Tribune's Chris Detrick was named Best Photographer.

Former Deseret Morning News editor John Hughes received the Clifford P. Cheney Service to Journalism Award. Ted McDonough, of City Weekly, won best newspaper reporter honors for large-circulation publications. The Deseret Morning News, The Spectrum and the Tooele Transcript took best newspaper awards in their respective circulation categories.
Jenny Brundin of KUER was named best radio reporter. John Hollenhorst of KSL took best television reporter honors.
