P.O.S., Dessa
Show of the week » With Fat Tuesday quickly approaching on Feb. 16, it's time frostbitten cities such as Salt Lake City and Minneapolis start a Mardi Gras-style warm-up tradition of their own. What better time would there be than Feb. 6, when P.O.S. and Dessa from Minneapolis bring their hip-hop spirit to the cozy confines of Salt Lake City's Kilby Court? P.O.S. is a favorite of locals every time he comes into town because his sound represents the best of underground hip-hop. As part of the Doomtree hip-hop collective, P.O.S. brings to rap the fury he once felt as a punk rocker. "A lot of people who have something to say get drowned out," P.O.S. said in a Tribune interview. "Everyone [in mainstream rap circles] is just so dumb." P.O.S., a leader of the collective, is bringing with him fellow collective member Dessa, spoken-word poet and singer whose first music album was released Jan. 19. Dessa said performing her own material live is "not terrifying, but is not not terrifying." Also a Minneapolis native, she said the music community of Minnesota is communal and inclusive -- something she said P.O.S. has told her about Kilby Court. Bring out the King Cake.
