Former Salt Lake City Mayor Ted Wilson has been named executive director of the Utah Rivers Council.

He replaces Merritt Frey, who has accepted a position with River Network, a national alliance of river protection managers.

She will manage the Western Clean Water Project. Wilson was the capital city's mayor from 1976 to 1985. He directed the University of Utah's Hinckley Institute of Politics for 18 years, retiring in 2004.

The Utah Rivers Council encourages conservation as an alternative to large water projects.

The conservation organization also encourages protection of river wildlife and advocates for river-related recreation.
