All the hype surrounded the "dream mile" and its lineup of star runners at Saturday's Arcadia (Calif.) Invitational, but it was a discus thrower whose dream came true.

Mountain View's Nik Arrhenius shattered the national high-school discus mark with a throw of 234 feet,

3 inches, eclipsing the 1989 mark of 225-2 by Kamy Keshmiri of Reno, Nev.

"Every meet, I keep thinking, 'I've got to get it [the record], I've got to get it,' " Arrhenius said. "It was just a relief to get it off my shoulders."

Arrhenius was leading the competition with a throw of more than 217 feet, then uncorked the record-breaker on his final attempt, which resulted in a wild father-son celebration.

"He jumped over and gave me a hug and a kiss," Arrhenius said of his father, Anders. "He was pretty excited. I don't think I've ever seen my dad jump before."

Arrhenius had to wait 10 minutes before receiving the official word. Then, he said he spend the next half hour or so in "Neverland."

"This is the greatest feeling I've ever had," he said.

Arrhenius also won the shot put with a throw of 63-5.

As for the mile, it still delivered. Pre-meet favorite Alan Webb of Reston, Va., who ran under 4 minutes indoors, won the event in 4:01. Mountain View's Dustin Bybee ran a 4:08 and Roy's Seth Pilkington a 4:11. Official places of the race and other meet results were not available.
