Sixteen students from schools throughout Utah have been named Daniels Scholars based on their character, academic promise and record of community service. The award comes with stipends of varying amounts to help students pay for college.

"These are promising and motivated students determined to succeed in life, but lack financial and other resources to continue their education,"said Linda Childears, president and CEO of the Daniels Fund, in a news release announcing the awards. "They are outstanding young people and the Daniels Fund is proud to partner with them as they fulfill their dreams of attending college."

The fund was established in 1997 by the late Bill Daniels, who launched a cable TV business in 1953 in Casper, Wyo., and went on to own and operate hundreds of such systems across the country. He was the owner of the American Basketball Association's Utah Stars team and an inductee in the Utah Sports Hall of Fame.

The Daniels Fund provides grants and scholarships to students in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming and is among the largest foundations in the Rocky Mountain West. Since 2000, 84 Utah students have earned scholarships. Also, more than $10 million has been given to nonprofit organizations in the state serving the needy.

Awards provided by the fund cover costs remaining after other financial aid resources have been applied. Students also receive a laptop computer and a printer.

This year's Utah winners include Alexis Halladay, Cedar City; Nikota Vacher, Goshen; Anthony Rose, Henrieville; Charei Rosenvall, Magna; Britney Whipple, Minersville; Donald Lewis, Pleasant Grove; Megan Jayme, Price; Christoper Svensson and Armond Na'Oupu, Provo; Justin Singleton, Richfield; Merima Beganovic, Luke Mirabelli and Joel Organista, Salt Lake City; Elizabeth Smith, Taylorsville; and Paul Thach, West Valley City.
