A 34-year-old man was charged Friday with killing his girlfriend at a Salt Lake City motel earlier this week.
Deborah Haudley was found dead after 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in Room 406 of the Gateway Inn, 819 W. North Temple St., jail booking documents state.
Her boyfriend, Oscar Reyes, is accused of hitting her in the head during a fight Monday night, causing head trauma and bleeding on the brain. He is charged with third-degree felony homicide by assault, court documents state.
Reyes, to whom the room was registered, said he found Haudley dead in bed when he awoke Tuesday, Salt Lake City police said. The couple had been drinking together until about midnight.
Reyes told police he and Haudley had fought over a cell phone on Monday and he had hit her in the head twice with his open hand, booking documents state. He said Haudley took a shower and then went to bed. Tuesday morning he found her dead on the bed next to him.
On Tuesday, Reyes told another woman he knew that he killed his girlfriend. He threatened to kill her, too, if she told police, charging documents state. An autopsy determined Haudley apparently died of trauma to the head and bleeding on the brain, booking documents state.
Downstairs guests told police they heard yelling and the sound of fighting from the room Monday and Tuesday.
Reyes was interviewed by police Tuesday and then booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of homicide. Reyes also is charged with tampering with a witness, a third-degree felony. He remains in jail on $100,000 bail.
