The Utah House welcomed several members of the late Sen. Pete Suazo's family onto their floor Thursday as they voted to honor his memory by adding his name to a section of Redwood Road.

Suazo died in a 2001 all-terrain vehicle accident while hunting. He was Utah's first Latino senator and a champion of youth boxing.

In a tearful tribute before voting on the bill, Rep. Jennifer Seelig, D-Salt Lake City, said Suazo taught those around him to respect opposing viewpoints but fight for their cause. Because of him, she said, "We know to never give up."

SB117, already passed in the Senate, adds Suazo's name to the state highway between 2100 South and 1700 North in Salt Lake City. It carries no additional costs because it calls for adding his name to the road signs only when the old signs need replacing.
