A man wanted for allegedly running down a law officer on Tuesday as the man escaped apprehension for shoplifting at a Salt Lake City Costco store was arrested Wednesday afternoon.

The man was taken into custody by West Valley City police officers at the Target store at 2800 S. 5600 West, Salt Lake City police reported at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The shoplifting incident occurred at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday outside the Costco store at 1818 S. 300 West. An off-duty Adult Probation and Parole officer noticed an employee chasing the suspect, who allegedly had stolen items and run from the store into the parking lot.

The suspect reached his car and then drove at the officer, who was attempting to stop him. The officer was struck, landing on the suspect car's hood and then onto the asphalt.

The officer escaped with minor injuries, but the suspect got away in a 2008 model BMW 328i convertible. Police later learned, upon checking the vehicle's plate number (D514MD), that it had been stolen on Dec. 14.

Police developed further information and reported the man also is suspected of having led officers on no fewer than five high-speed chases over the past week.
