Provo • Parents of teenagers in Park City can rest assured: If all of the snow in the mountains melted at the same time, their kids probably would be able to swim to safety.

The Miners, boys' and girls', rolled to convincing team wins at the Class 3A state swimming championships in Provo on Saturday. The Park City girls scored the highest team total in Utah swimming history with 581 points, more than double second-place Cedar (284). The Miners boys, meanwhile, racked up 434.5 points to grab their first state title ahead of runner-up Cedar (257).

One event that illustrated Park City's dominance at the BYU pool was the girls' 500-yard freestyle, in which Miners finished 1-2-3-4.

"I'm just so grateful that I've had the opportunity to be in such an amazing program, with these kids pushing me every day in practice," said Park City's Alandra McDowell, who won the race in addition to Friday's 200 individual medley. "I love distance swimming and going longer. I just think it's really fun."

In McDowell's wake on Saturday in the 500 free were teammates Siena Senn, Sabine Caplin and Megan Flake. Senn and Caplin are freshmen, as was McDowell's younger sister Blaire, who won the 100 breaststroke in a 3A state-record time of 1:06.

"It's so exciting. It's just amazing to see how much talent we have coming up the pipe," said Alandra McDowell, who plans to walk on at the University of Minnesota. "I'm looking forward to coming back next year and seeing Sabine and Siena and see how they do."

Rozie Selznick, a sophomore for Park City, won the 100 free Saturday after winning Friday's 200 free. Park City freshman Katie Hess set a new state 3A record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.45 seconds.

For the Miners boys, junior Jinwon Bailar doubled by winning the individual medley and 100 backstroke in a state 3A record time of 52.04.

Bailar initially joked it was a lack of snow this season that paved the way for Park City swimming success at the state meet before adding, "I think a big part of it is that we're up training at altitude. We come down a few thousand feet to race here, so we have a little bit of an advantage."

The only swimmer to make a dent in the girls' procession of Park City triumphs was Desert Hills senior Zoe Smith, who won the 50 freestyle on Friday.

For the boys, Canyon View junior Nathan Wallace doubled by taking both the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Aside from Smith and Wallace, the only other non-Park City victor was Cedar senior Colby Clark, who beat Miners frosh Cole Peterson in the boys' 500 freestyle.

"It feels really good," said Clark, after coming down from the first-place podium. "I was kind of sick of seeing the red caps up there." —
