Firefighters say a smoke alarm likely saved both property and potentially lives in a two-alarm blaze at a Provo extended stay motel early Monday morning.

Crews from Provo and neighboring Orem rushed to the scene of the fire at the Little Suites, 1380 S. University Ave., just before 1 a.m.

The fire was found inside an unoccupied unit and doused, but smoke and water damage rendered eight total units uninhabitable. The Utah Red Cross was offering assistance to those displaced.

Provo Fire Capt. Dean York said the cause of the blaze was under investigation. Damages were estimated to range from $45,000 to $75,000.

A resident reportedly heard the smoke alarm and notified the motel's manager, who called 911.

No injuries were reported.
