A jury has found a West Jordan man guilty of negligent criminal homicide in connection with a head-on collision that left one man dead in 2012.
Francisco Garcia Ramirez was in the front passenger seat of a Honda Accord at a Bangerter Highway intersection when it was hit head-on by Carl Holm's minivan on Sept. 22, 2012.
Holm was found guilty Thursday of one count of class A misdemeanor negligent criminal homicide after a three day trial in 3rd District Court.
Holm, 51, will face a potential punishment of up to one year in jail when he is sentenced on July 10 by Judge Katie Bernards-Goodman.
Witnesses told police that Holm was swerving in and out of northbound travel lanes near the State Road 201 overpass when he ran a red light and slammed into the Honda, according to court documents.
Holm was reportedly traveling at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, even though the posted speed limit on that section of Bangerter Highway is 55 mph.
An autopsy found Ramirez died from injuries suffered after blunt force trauma to his chest, court documents say.
