A man allegedly stole a Washington County Sheriff's deputy's patrol vehicle Friday morning and led officers on a chase.

Shortly after 11 a.m., the officer responded to a report of a stolen vehicle near 1000 N. State St. in La Verkin. As he approached the scene, a different car was pulling up and he stopped it to talk to the driver, said sheriff's office Chief Deputy Shauna Jones.

While he spoke to the driver, a passenger jumped out and allegedly took off with the deputy's Dodge Charger, Jones said.

A pursuit began minutes later when Hurricane police officers spotted the stolen Charger. The suspect allegedly led officers from several agencies on a chase and eventually lost them near the town of Rockville, Jones said.

However, as he traveled through Zion National Park, Kane County Sheriff's deputies and park rangers were waiting for him at the east Kane County entrance, Jones said. At about 11:55 a.m., they spiked the Charger's tires at the entrance and took the man into custody.

The 30-year-old suspect was booked into Washington County Jail.
