A 51-year-old West Jordan man was sentenced to one year in jail Friday for causing a head-on collision that left one man dead in 2012.
Carl John Holm was found guilty by a jury in May of class A misdemeanor negligent criminal homicide in the death of Francisco Garcia Ramirez.
On Friday, 3rd District Judge Katie Bernards-Goodman sentenced Holm to the maximum jail term of 365 days, but gave him credit for 67 days he had previously served.
On Sept. 22, 2012, Holm was seen swerving in and out of the northbound lanes on Bangerter Highway at a high rate of speed.
Near the intersection of Bangerter Highway and State Road 201, Holm ran a red light and slammed into a Honda in which Ramirez was a front-seat passenger, according to court documents.
Holm was reportedly traveling at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, even though the posted speed limit on that section of Bangerter Highway is 55 mph.
