BYU's 2016 football schedule, which some are already calling the most ambitious in school history, was finalized on Wednesday with the announcement that the Cougars will play Southern Utah University on Nov. 12, 2016 at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
To make room for the Thunderbirds on the schedule, BYU's scheduled game at Cincinnati the second weekend of November has been moved to Nov. 5, 2016.
SUU, a member of the Big Sky Conference and an FCS program, is 4-2 this season after four straight wins; Former BYU coach Gary Crowton was SUU's offensive coordinator until last month when he abruptly resigned and took a job as an offensive consultant for Oregon State last week.
SUU head coach Ed Lamb is a former BYU player.
"We needed a home game to finalize our 2016 schedule and SUU had an opening," said BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe. "It turned out to be a good fit for both schools. We look forward to hosting the Thunderbirds next year in Provo."
It will be the first meeting on the football field between BYU and SUU.
SUU moved its game against Northern Arizona from Nov. 12 to Nov. 19 to accommodate the agreement with BYU.
"We are excited to cement a date for our first ever football game against BYU," said SUU athletic director Jason Butikofer.
"I am excited that BYU would consider us worthy of being on their schedule," said Lamb.
