Utah Highway Patrol troopers say excessive speed was to blame for the crash of a semi-trailer rig hauling cattle on a ramp from Interstate 15 to Interstate 84 near Riverdale.

UHP Sgt. Todd Royce said the investigation into the 10 a.m. Monday crash, which killed 70 of the more than 80 cows aboard the trailer, was ongoing — but it was likely the driver would be cited.

The driver of the truck was not hurt when the big rig went out of control on a curve and toppled onto its right side on the ramp, near mile post 341.

The scene was closed down for about seven hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage, dead and injured livestock.
