Draper • To say Viewmont's boys' soccer team won its first state title since 1995 in dramatic fashion would not do the Vikings justice.

First, there was a quarterfinal victory over Mountain Crest on a last-second goal by Drake Cook last week.

Then, there was a tying goal by Cook with 11 minutes to go in Tuesday's semifinal against Lone Peak, in which shootout goals by Marshall Johnson, Weston Huber, Gabe Johnson and Jack Fox won it after two overtimes settled it.

And, in Thursday's physical 4-2 championship win over Fremont, Viewmont fell behind in the 57th minute only to get a tying goal by Kason Larsen off a rebound and a header goal by Marshall Johnson after a perfect throw-in by Jarron Brown.

By the time Cook scored with 13 seconds to play to put an exclamation point on his fine junior season, the large Viewmont crowd was already on its feet in celebration.

"I have never been part of a team that could come back like that," said Cook, who scored 10 of his team's last 12 goals this season. "Every single game we come back. We blossomed at the right time. Wow! I'm speechless."

Viewmont needed to come back twice for this one in a game where five yellow cards were given.

Fremont's Alec Ferrin put the Silver Wolves on the board 11 minutes into the game, but Cook kept up his hot streak by tying it eight minutes later off a free kick from about 13 yards out on the right side.

The Silver Wolves, who had never captured a state boys soccer title, took the lead on a beautiful play finished by Austin Freeman in the 57th minute.

Marshall Johnson said he and Brown had practiced the throw-in goal that resulted in the winning goal all year.

"It just happened and I hit it in," he said. "I knew I would get one in. It was about time. This was the state championship. This is about as good as you could get."

First-year Viking head coach Spencer Keddington said that he expected the tough battle with Fremont which, until this year, was a long-time Region 1 rival.

"We won it in Viewmont fashion," said the jubilant Viking coach. "We have to go down a goal and then see crazy things happen."
