The Aug. 11 Utah Policy article on the Utah Senate race: "Mike Lee leads Misty Snow by 35 points...." focused solely on the red/blue race. A walloping red slice of the pie chart dwarfed a blue slice less than half its size. But the article didn't mention a story worth telling.

Look at the modest purple slice. Unaffiliated candidate Bill Barron has an estimated 6 percent of Utah's vote. That's worth noting. Barron is a single-issue candidate making his third run for national office under the single banner of climate. His goal is for 10 percent of Utah voters to use their vote to tell Washington to take bold action to cool our warming climate.

With 6 percent Barron is over half way to his goal. And this on a shoe-string budget, working nearly full-time and supported by a handful of volunteer campaign staff. Barron's story tells us that everyday people can stand up and participate in democracy. That we can use our voices and the political system for good. That we can make a difference within the system and that doing so makes it better.

We're voting purple this year — for the climate, for our children, for Utah. We're voting for Bill Barron for U.S. Senate.
