A person died after a car fire in Utah County on Wednesday night.

The person, whose sex was unknown, was driving alone on State Route 77 about 6:30 p.m., said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce.

Investigators are unsure what precipitated the incident, but the sedan ended up on the side of the road and was engulfed in flames. There were no signs of a collision.

Crews extinguished the fire by 7:12 p.m., Royce said, though lanes remained closed in both directions at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Police were investigating the cause and working to identify the person.
