Orem • For the Bountiful Braves, claiming a second straight Class 4A state title trophy turned out to be a bit of an adventure on Saturday.

Not during the matches, mind you. There, the Braves had almost no difficulty at all in cruising through four state tournament matches without dropping a single set.

The problems, such as they were, came just on the heels of Bountiful's 25-17, 25-17, 25-22 takedown of Corner Canyon when star Seyvion Waggoner twisted her ankle in the celebration immediately after the match was sealed.

Moments later, other members of the Braves took a tumble during the excitement of the 4A championship trophy being handed to them.

"We got too excited," said Waggoner, who scored 15 kills and blocked five shots in the win over the Chargers.

"But I'm fine, I'm good, I'm always good," added Waggoner, hopping around on one leg.

Bountiful (31-2) suffered its only setbacks of the season in abbreviated matches as part of the Rocky Mountain Champions tourney in September. But the Braves a month later won the highly regarded Claim Jumper invitational at Bingham High — and just kept on rolling after that.

"We are a better team than we were three weeks ago. Our defense began swarming and our blocking became dominant," said Bountiful coach Sarah Chism. "That was our goal all season long — to just keep getting better."

Chism was an assistant in 2015, when the Braves switched head coaches at the beginning of the season.

"This is big for our program. It shows we can be consistent and that we can put in the work every year," Chism said. "A lot of people doubted us, that we could be as strong as we were last year. But I think we showed we were stronger."

The Braves never trailed in the first set and, leading 20-16, got four straight points off the serve of Brie Pe'a in a run that included two aces and a kill and block by Waggoner.

Bountiful then pounced on Corner Canyon (22-9), scoring the first eight points and roaring to an 11-1 lead.

The Chargers chipped away and got to within 18-15, but a 4-0 run — including two Waggoner kills — helped finish off that game.

Corner Canyon, with only two seniors on the squad, was led by Zoe Tippetts' nine kills. Tippetts and libero Sydnee Peterson will be the only graduation losses at the end of this school year for the Chargers.

"I look at this program and we only won two matches and we're now here taking second place at state," Corner Canyon coach Mindy Wilder said.

But a seasoned and well-balanced Bountiful squad proved too much for the Chargers to take the last step. In addition to Waggoner's output, middle Kelsie White had eight kills, outside Sydney Asay scored six putaways and right-side hitter had five kills and three blocks.

"Last year was awesome because it was a new thing," White said. "This year, we knew what it felt like and it's amazing to do it again." —

R Bountiful wins its second straight Class 4A title behind senior Seyvion Waggoner, who has a match-high 15 kills and five blocks.

• The Braves, who beat Salem Hills in an earlier semifinal on Saturday, sweep all four of their state tournament matches.

• Corner Canyon, winner of only two matches two years ago, knocks out Mountain View in its semi to get to the finale.
