A man was fatally injured early Tuesday morning when hit by a pickup truck as he jaywalked across a pre-dawn southeast Salt Lake City street, police say.

Salt Lake City police Detective Richard Chipping said that 41-year-old Lester Dewey and his brother, whose name was not released, were attempting to cross 1300 East at 2400 South about 7:10 a.m., near the Interstate 80 off-ramp, when a northbound Dodge Durango struck the victim.

Dewey was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

His brother was uninjured.

The accident was under investigation, but Chipping confirmed the victim was not in a crosswalk and that it was still dark at the time of the incident.

Traffic was diverted around the site for several hours while police gathered evidence and cleared the scene.
