A missionary with the LDS church was killed by a stray bullet Monday in Jamaica when he was caught in the crossfire of a police shootout.

Jermaine Luther Walker was serving a mission in his hometown of Kingston, according to a statement by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Walker was returning to his apartment with seven other missionaries in a van that was caught in crossfire as police were pursuing a vehicle.

Walker was struck by a bullet and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, church officials wrote. None of the other missionaries were injured.
