Establishing who the main players are going to be in the secondary was one of the Utes' main goals going into spring ball, but coach Kyle Whittingham said Wednesday that battle might not be settled until fall when the newcomers have arrived. Junior Ryan Lacy and senior Conroy Black have established themselves at the corners with junior Reggie Topps and sophomore Wykie Freeman as backups. However, the safety spots remain unsettled. "Terrell Reese is doing some good things and Quade Chappuis and Michael Walker," Whittingham said. "But who the safeties are probably won't be determined until fall." That is when three signees, Joseph Bryant, Keith McGill and Eric Rowe are expected to arrive. McGill was a first-team All-America safety for Cerritos College. "We won't change things schematically but we'll see how fast they pick things up," Whittingham said. The Utes went through another long practice Wednesday, going almost an hour longer than scheduled. Whittingham said there is no separation at running back or quarterback and hopes to see some during Friday's scrimmage. Receiver DeVonte Christopher isn't expected to return to practice due to a hamstring injury. Projected as a starter, Christopher is developing as a receiver and needed the time on the field, Whittingham said. "He played good football for us last year but he has limited experience and has a lot of things to polish up and work on," he said. "But he is talented enough to make up ground he lost over the summer when they throw on their own."
