Provo • One of the most highly regarded high school quarterbacks in the West from the class of 2012 has committed to play football for BYU.
Tanner Mangum, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound junior at Eagle High in Boise, Idaho, told BYU coaches last weekend he is headed their way after visiting the school and watching the Cougars scrimmage at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
Mangum's coach, Paul Peterson, told the Idaho Statesman newspaper Tuesday that it was "a very, very, very agonizing decision" for Mangum because he had several other scholarship offers, including invitations from Utah, Arkansas and Boise State.
Mangum missed most of last season with a fractured collarbone, but still threw for 10 touchdowns and 874 yards. His older brother, Parker Mangum, played sparingly for the Cougars from 2007-2009 after transferring to BYU when St. Mary's College dropped football.
Tanner Mangum will most likely go on an LDS Church mission before enrolling at BYU. He is expected to be one of the top players in Idaho this coming fall.
The Cougars signed quarterback Alex Kuresa in February, but the Mountain Crest High product is also expected to go on a church mission before enrolling.
