Downtown Salt Lake City's loss is Trolley Square's gain.

Sam Weller's Books, the landmark indie bookseller founded in 1929 and situated at 254 S. Main St. for 50 years, will be moving to a 10,000-square-foot space once housing the Trolley Square Theatres on the shopping center's southwest corner, store owners Catherine and Tony Weller announced today.

"Though we will leave our Main Street home of 50 years with a certain sadness, we are excited to embrace the possibilities of designing a new millennial bookstore," the Wellers said in a statement. "We have considered our bookselling heritage, the evolving book industry and the effects of computers and digitization in conceiving of our future bookstore."

The Wellers have signed a lease with Trolley Square, and says the store will open there this fall. The store has hired Jill Jones of ajc architects and Easton River Construction to design and remodel the new space.

The Wellers announced in March 2009 that they were looking to move out of their funky, three-tiered space in the Keith Building, where parking and downtown foot traffic were scarce.
