A Nevada man died when his vehicle crashed into a concrete pillar at freeway speed in southern Utah on Friday night, authorities said.
The roads were wet and it was raining at about 9 p.m. when Michael Greene, 38, of Henderson, Nev., was driving north on Interstate 15 just south of Parowan. His Land Rover crossed the median and hit an overpass pillar, the Utah Highway Patrol said.
Nothing indicated braking prior to the crash. Greene, the only occupant, was ejected from the SUV, UHP said. After impact, the SUV burst into flames.
UHP said "speeds were determined to be very high," and witnesses to the crash said the SUV passed them in the emergency lane going about 75 miles per hour. UHP said someone called to report the Land Rover being operated recklessly "about six to 10 minutes before the crash."
