Two people on a bullet bike died early Friday as the driver tried to elude Carbon County police in a high-speed chase.
Carbon County Sheriff's Capt. Guy Adams said a man and a woman first caught the attention of Price police about 2 a.m. Friday as their motorcycle roared through town at 95 mph. When Price officers pursued, the bike accelerated and was soon out of sight.
Carbon County deputies then spotted the motorcycle on Cedar Hills Drive leaving Price, but when they attempted pursuit the bullet bike accelerated again, hitting 134 mph.
"At that point, pursuit was terminated for safety reasons," Adams said, noting that the bike was traveling so fast at the end of the chase that its speed could not be measured on radar.
About 3:20 a.m., a Union Pacific freight train employee called 911 to report having spotted a body near the 400 West rail crossing in Wellington. Deputies responding to the scene found the remains of the man and the woman, along with wreckage of the bike.
"Our initial investigation indicates the motorcycle driver failed to negotiate a curve and crashed. Both the man and woman appeared to have died on impact," Adams said.
Identities of the dead were being withheld pending notification of their families.
