The Wasatch Hills Seventh-day Adventist Church will mark half a century as a congregation in Utah with Sabbath services this Saturday.

Spokesman Mark Kellner said that while the church will celebrate its golden anniversary in the state beginning 10 a.m. at 2139 Foothill Drive, Adventists are believed to have had a community presence in Salt Lake City dating back to tent meetings 125 years ago.

"We're a diverse community in terms of ages, races and occupations," Kellner said. "Oh, and we observe what we call the 'Bible Sabbath,' Saturday, which for most of our neighbors is probably the busiest shopping [and] errand day of the week."

Seventh-day Adventists view the Sabbath as an "oasis in time," he added, a day "God carved out for faith, family and personal restoration."

Saturday's services will include several former pastors, among them Skip MacCarty, John Eagan, Bernie Anderson and Adam Case.

In addition to other community and charitable outreach programs, Wasatch Hills operates Summit Christian Academy, a private school at 4020 S. 900 East. Adventist education has been around in Utah for 90 years.
