Utah's record might be subpar, but the team's attitude isn't, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham and players said Monday.

While fans might be wondering how their team can be 0-2 in conference play, something that hasn't happened since the 2007 season, when Utah lost to Air Force and UNLV, Whittingham said he knew that Utah's first foray into a BCS conference wouldn't be easy.

"It's a competitive league, and it is going to be like this every week," he said. "If people thought we were going to come in here our first year and take the Pac-12 by storm and walk away with the title, that is not reality. This is reality. It's a good conference and it takes time and recruiting the right personnel and building the roster; it's a process."

Whittingham said he wasn't concerned that the 1-2 Utes would lose their focus or desire.

"You keep your head up and fight your way through adversity … and you find out who you really are and what you are made of," Whittingham said. "The sky is not falling. We're not sitting at 0-4 and can't score a point or stop anybody. We lost a tough one at USC and got beat Saturday."

Tight end Dallin Rogers said the team remains upbeat.

"We came in and lifted this morning, and all you can do is get back to work," he said. "The only way to fix it is get back to work."

Whittingham blamed Saturday's loss more on Utah's turnovers than personnel issues.

"If we were able to score in the red zone instead of turning it over, that might have changed the complexion of the game," he said. "We didn't do that, so it is a nonissue, but the margin for error in this conference is small. You cannot get away with four or five turnovers and still come away with a victory. It's not like that in this league."

Those other guys

Jordan Wynn's injury dominated Monday's news conference, but the quarterback isn't the only key player dealing with an injury. Offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom (knee) and tight ends Kendrick Moeai (ankle) and Jake Murphy (knee) are all listed as questionable, although their recoveries are going well.

Bergstrom, a senior who has started 28 games, could be a game-time decision.

"He is a veteran enough player that he could do that," Whittingham said.

Of note

The Pac-12 announced that Utah's Oct. 15 game at Pitt will kick off at 10 a.m. MDT and be televised by ESPNU. … Utah and Arizona State have not played in Salt Lake City since 1977, when both schools were members of the Western Athletic Conference. The Sun Devils won that game 47-19.
