The Leopards keeper managed to tip away Olympus' Sam Gardiner's offering to secure a spot in the state semifinals.
"It's insane," Elders said. "I was just jumping and hoping for dear life I could get a hand on that last shot. I knew nothing about where he was going with it. It was a good PK, but I was just able to guess the right way and get my hand to it.
"Last year in the first round, I let a bad goal go in and we got knocked out early. To come back here and pretty much win the game, it's a great feeling. It's a good bounce-back from that ending."
The game entered the final 10 minutes of regulation knotted at 0-0 with both Elders and Johnson making some astounding saves to keep it scoreless.
After a frustrating afternoon of soccer where neither team could unlock the other's defense, East senior forward Matt Barker finally broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute thanks to a setup from fellow senior Yves Govina.
After winning the ball near the sideline, Govina charged into the Olympus 18-yard box and got around his primary defender. With Johnson shuffling to protect his near post from the rushing forward, Govina laid a diagonal ball back toward the penalty spot hoping for a teammate to capitalize.
Barker jumped on the pass and tapped it in to the far post corner to ensure that East would not be shut out for the first time this season.
"I was just putting it into the danger area," Govina said. "That's what we practice all the time. We just know each other and where we're going to be. A goal was expected in that situation."
"It was indescribable," Barker said about his go-ahead goal. "We fought so hard and we gave it our all and we just never gave up. We still had some work to do because we didn't get it done [in regulation]. But however we get the win, we'll take it."
The extra time was necessary after Olympus scored in the 78th minute thanks to a long throw-in by Tony Foulger. After sailing toward the East penalty box, the ball deflected toward the far post, where Matt Lockwood was waiting. The senior midfielder pounced on the deflection and sneaked it past Elders into the bottom corner.
Lockwood nearly ended the game a minute later when his shot from distance hit the crossbar.
But after 100 minutes of soccer, it took a shootout to decide the winner.
