Provo • In its final nonconference tuneup, BYU sputtered and coughed but finally shifted into high gear Tuesday night at the Marriott Center.

Noah Hartsock finished with 20 points and Matt Carlino scored 16 of his 19 in the second half, when the Cougars wore down Cal State San Marcos and rolled to a 79-51 victory.

BYU improved its record to 11-3 heading into Thursday's West Coast Conference opener at St. Mary's.

Early, the Cougars struggled with Cal State San Marcos, which closed the first half with a 9-2 run and trailed only 32-23.

"The pace got us in a hurry," said BYU coach Dave Rose. "We over-passed, overdrove and a little frustration set in."

The Cougars owned a tenuous 45-38 lead with 11:13 remaining before Hartsock and Brandon Davies scored from the lane.

On the next possession, Hartsock passed up an open 17-footer and swung the ball to Carlino, who buried a 3-pointer.

Carlino then stole the ball and scored again, giving BYU an insurmountable 54-38 lead with nine minutes left.

According to Rose, Hartsock "passed up a good shot for a better shot," which led to Carlino's critical five-point sequence.

"You've got to have confidence in the next guy," Rose said. "That's what makes us good."

Carlino struggled in the first half, after he picked up two fouls in the opening 2:58 and was forced to the bench.

"I guess I didn't focus in," he said. "... Luckily, our bigs were outstanding. That helped out."

Davies had 10 of his 14 points and 10 of his 13 rebounds in the first half.

Hartsock also scored 10 points in the opening 20 minutes, including a basket with 2:48 left that gave BYU a 30-14 lead.

Cal State San Marcos stayed in the game, however, until BYU's powerful stretch run.

"They battled early," Carlino said. "[But] they fatigued at the end, which a lot of people do here. And we jumped on them."

Fresno State transfer Tim Steed scored 11 points for CSSM, which shot only 36 percent in the game and was 5-for-19 from the 3-point line.

"Our kids got tired," coach Jim Saia said. "We controlled the tempo for about 30 minutes and, if a couple of shots go down, then we can maintain our tempo. But they didn't go down."
