Police say a couple made a vacant Taylorsville rental home their own, at least long enough to take showers, watch television and sip some hot chocolate.
As a result, said Taylorsville police Sgt. Tracy Wyant, the 39-year-old man and 25-year-old woman were cited Monday on class A misdemeanor criminal trespass charges in connection with the Nov. 8 entry at the home near 3800 West and 5200 South. Police say the two allegedly entered the home, which was being remodeled, through an unlocked door.
Police had earlier screened the case as a burglary, since construction workers initially reported that carpeting and tools had been stolen. However, Wyant said investigators were unable find enough evidence to support a burglary or theft charge, so the case was filed as a criminal trespassing incident.
Wyant said investigators were able to run down the suspects through a bank card receipt found on the premises.
Police say the suspects, both from Taylorsville, acknowledged entering the home after having shopped at a nearby convenience store.
The woman did not have a previous criminal history, Wyant said, but the man is a parolee with an extensive record that includes burglary,forgery, drug and property crimes.
