On Utah's effort"Great effort. We're coming, we're getting better. (We) played against a good team tonight. They were a little bit better than we were but our effort was great. The guys did a great job of hanging in there. Everybody was a little tired, they were tired also. But I was proud of my guys and they fought the entire game."
Josh Howard – Forward (18 points, 4 rebounds)On tonight's loss"Overall I think we put forth the maximum effort. It teaches us what we need to do night-in and night-out. Tough loss like you said, but we need to turn the page and get ready for New Jersey."
On comparing this Jazz team to the Jazz of the first game of the season"Two totally different teams. We have been learning a lot since the few weeks from that game. We just have to get ready to start a new streak now."
Raja Bell – Guard (7 Points, 3 Assists)On losing the lead in overtime"I always think we are better when our ball is moving and our people are moving. There were a few possessions where we got the ball into the post late in the shot clock and then just sat and watched. I think it was a credit to the Lakers, they turned their defense up, made tough shots and made us go one on one."
On the battle between he and Kobe"Yeah, it was a good game. I felt like we had great opportunities tonight and feel like we did some things really well as a team. You know Kobe's going to get a volume of shots; he's going to get the ball all night long and you have to trust that you have good help behind you and make it tough for him. He's going to score his points. Scorers in this league, I've always subscribed to this theory, they're going to get their points… you just have to make him take a field goal percentage to your liking. If he's going to take 31 shots to get 40, then that's pretty much all you can do. Anyone shooting 31 shots should score 40."Al Jefferson – Forward (11 Points, 11 Rebounds)On the difference down the stretch"We did everything right, but made some mistakes. They found a way to win. "
On comparing this Jazz team to the Jazz of the first week of the season"We have improved. We are playing harder and I know we are a different team than we were to start with."
On the Laker defense"They defended me really good tonight and it got to the point where I didn't want to take shots anymore and just get the ball to my teammates."Notes: The Lakers won their first road game of the season after starting 0-3 away from Staples Center ... Kobe Bryant scored 14 of his 40 points in the first quarter … This was Bryant's second consecutive game of 40 or more points ( 48 points, 1/10/11 vs. Phoenix) … Bryant has averaged 26.2 points per game in 52 career regular season games against the Jazz … The Lakers entered the game tied for 3rd in the NBA in scoring defense … The Lakers held an opponent under 90 points for the seventh time this season ... Pau Gasol'sgo-ahead three-pointer in overtime was his first of the season … Gasol finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds … The Lakers closed the game on a 9-2 run … Darius Morris (rookie, Michigan) saw the first action of his NBA career and finished with four points and two assists.
Mike Brown – Head Coach (8-4 this season)On the defensive effort against the Jazz"As a team, defensively, you like our effort. Like everybody else, we look good sometimes offensively and sometimes we don't. The last couple of games we've looked okay, but hadn't looked great. A bunch of our guys are trying to understand and say hey, let's bring a hardhat to the gym everyday and let's defend. We have a closer in Kobe and he'll help us get wins offensively … It was a physical game. Either team could have won. I really liked the perseverance of our guys. "
On Bynum's defense on Al Jefferson"Andrew was good too. He kind of made up his own coverage on Al (Jefferson). We kept trying to tell him to get out of it, but he wouldn't listen to us. Whatever he did worked. So, I may add it to my defensive playbook. May just call it the Bynum-package or something like that. You're not going to stop a guy like (Al) Jefferson, you just hope you can make him work. I thought Andrew did a solid job of trying to make him work, trying to keep him in front of him and make him shoot over him."
Kobe Bryant – Guard (40 points, 8 rebounds)On getting team's first road win of the season"We were bound to get one eventually. It felt good to get one here. This is a very tough place to play and it was a huge test for us."
On defensive stop at the end of the game"It was a big play. He had to recover. He did a good job getting his hands on the ball. He had the athleticism to contest it at the end. It was a huge play."
Derek Fisher – Guard (2 points, 7 assists)On returning to Utah"Emotionally, at least, it's gotten easier. In terms of the game, it's always tough to get a win in this building, but, emotionally, each year that has gone by it's gotten a little bit easier and more comforting to come back… It's something that will always be with me and I'll never forget, but life has moved on."On defensive stops at the end of the game"Andrew's plays… the tip-in offensively to get a late bucket for us and then, defensively, to impact Al's first shot and then block the second attempt… those are big plays. Down the stretch, we rely so heavily on Kobe's offense that a lot of guys weren't touching the basketball offensively and so it's just great to have a guy make a major contribution like that to help us secure this game on the defensive end."
