The Japanese drama "About the Pink Sky" is one of several Sundance '12 titles that seem to make a viewer ask, "Where are these kids' parents?"
The story starts with high-school girl Izumi (Ai Ikeda), who finds a wallet stuffed with 300,000 yen (about $4,000), belonging to a rich classmate, Sato (Tsubasa Takayama). Before returning the wallet, though, she lends some of the money to an older gentleman with financial problems. When she does return the wallet, missing some of the money, Izumi guiltily agrees to help Sato create a newspaper filled with "good news" to cheer up a friend in the hospital.
Writer-director Keiichi Kobayashi tells an intriguing, poignant story of growing up told in surprising serenity, with long takes and black-and-white images.
