Run away with the circus

Artist Georges Rouault was drawn to the circus where he found that brilliant costumes and backdrops hid overwhelming sadness. The etchings, "Cirque de l'Étoile Filante (Circus of the Shooting Star)," strip away the spangles of the clown's costume and reveal the "reflection of paradise lost." The exhibition, on loan from the Syracuse University Art Galleries, includes color etchings and wood engravings. The show will be accompanied by an in-gallery puppet theater, a film series and art events for children.

When • Feb. 3-May 13

Where • Utah Museum of Fine Arts, University of Utah, Salt Lake City.
