A man was shot Saturday on a West Valley City front porch in what police believe may have been a drug- or gang-related incident.

West Valley City police Lt. Michael Coleman said the victim walked out onto the front porch about 8:30 p.m. near 3800 South and 7080 West when someone inside a vehicle that was sitting in front of the home fired four or five shots. The man was struck once in the stomach, he said. Other bullets lodged in the home and one more went into the ground, Coleman said.

The man was flown by helicopter to the University of Utah hospital where he was listed in serious condition late Saturday, Coleman said.

Coleman said it appeared the victim had communication with the suspects inside the vehicle prior to the shooting, but officers were still trying to determine what prompted the attack.

It was unclear if the victim knew the car was out in front of the home when he stepped outside. There were four people inside the home when the shooting occurred, but no one else was injured, he said.

He said officers were working to identify those who were inside the vehicle.
