Provo • After finishing in third place in their inaugural season in the West Coast Conference, the BYU Cougars were well represented Tuesday when the league handed out its annual postseason honors.

Senior forward Noah Hartsock and junior forward Brandon Davies made the 10-member All-WCC First Team, while freshman guard Matt Carlino made the five-member All-Freshman Team and was also named all-conference honorable mention.

Junior guard Matthew Dellavedova of league champion Saint Mary's is the WCC Player of the Year. Gonzaga's Rob Sacre is the Defensive Player of the Year — an honor that easily could have gone to BYU's Hartsock or Davies — and Gonzaga guard Kevin Pangos is the Newcomer of the Year.

Max Good of Loyola Marymount is the WCC Coach of the Year.

All four major awards, along with the All-WCC Team and All-Freshman Team, were voted on by the league's nine head coaches.

Postseason problems

Two years ago, freshman guard Tyler Haws suffered a fractured orbital bone injury at the Mountain West Conference tournament that caused him to miss a semifinal against UNLV. Last year, Davies was booted off the team for an honor code violation with two games remaining in the regular season.

And this year, leading scorer Hartsock is battling knee, ankle and calf injuries in his left leg.

The Cougars have had their share of mishaps when March Madness rolls around.

Junior guard Brock Zyl-stra called it a "big blow" to BYU's postseason hopes, but added: "We're a tough team. We will fight through it and we got tough guys on our team who are going to play through injuries. We just want to win. I think everybody on the team just wants to win, and they will do anything they can so that we can accomplish that goal."
