Despite possessing an incredible talent, Brandi Carlile has never been able to capture on record the vitality and energy she showcases on stage. (Maybe that will change with her forthcoming album "Bear Creek," out this summer.)

I remember the first time I saw her. I was on the Cayamo Cruise, a trip that included many stars and up-and-coming acts in the Americana/roots music world. She was named as one of the headliners, which surprised me, since the other headliners were well-established: Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, and Steve Earle. Since we were on the Cayamo Cruise, we were allowed to see each headliner once, and as well as an opportunity to see one of them a second time. I chose Earle, which was well worth it, but if I had to go back, I would select to see Carlile twice. She blew me away with her spirit and well-detailed songs and passion, and I only wish that her albums would reveal that, because Carlile has a talent that should make her a huge star.

One of her best songs is "The Story," and it you have ever see her yodel it live, you are missing out. Be sure to catch her this summer at Red Butte Garden.
