For a long time, Never Shout Never was essentially just pop singer-songwriter Christofer Drew and a few hired hands, but for this tour Never Shout Never is a band, with childhood friends Taylor MacFee and Hayden Kaiser full-fledged members. "They're homeboys," Drew said in a Tribune interview. "We've been playing together since we were 17." The three grew up together in Joplin, Mo., which was struck by a tornado in May 2011, killing 161 and leveling the town. Never Shout Never has spent much of the past year raising money for their hometown's victims, in partnership with the United Way. "Joplin is in a good spot," Drew said. "Everything is getting rebuilt." The band is officially touring behind its high-concept, layered 2011 album "Time Travel," but Drew is already writing an album tentatively called "Good Times," which will mark a return to Drew's acoustic roots. "There's no point in staying with the same thing," he said. "It keeps me on my toes, and keeps fans on their toes." Koki, Kurt Travis and Bearcat are also on the bill.
