No offense. Little pitching.

It was a troublesome combination for the Salt Lake Bees on Friday at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

In front of 5,591 fans on a cool and breezy evening, Las Vegas rolled to a 12-4 Pacific Coast League victory over suddenly staggering Salt Lake.

"We had a tough night," said manager Keith Johnson. "Obviously, we weren't as sharp on the mound as we [have been], and their pitcher did a good job of keeping us off balance at the plate."

The Bees lost for the third straight time as the 51s pounded out 18 hits. Seven of Las Vegas' nine starters had at least two hits.

During a four-run seventh inning, when the 51s broke the game open, six consecutive batters had base hits. Ricardo Nanita's bases-loaded, two-run double highlighted the outburst that gave Las Vegas an insurmountable 9-2 lead.

Contemplating a just-completed 5-2 trip, however, Johnson remained upbeat.

"Our pitchers did exceptionally well on the road," he said. "I'm not expecting anything different from those guys. Today was just a little bump in the road. But these guys will pick it right back up tomorrow."

Johnson seemed a little more concerned about the Salt Lake offense, which has been hurt by call-ups.

The Los Angeles Angels summoned highly regarded prospect Mike Trout a month ago. Outfielder Kole Calhoun and infielder Andrew Romine were called by the parent club in the past week.

"It's one of things where we keep losing guys to the big leagues, which is the goal," Johnson said. "We're trying our best to get all these guys up there. So as long as we keep losing guys to the big leagues, we'll keep trying to find ways to win down here."

Against the 51s, the Bees managed only four hits in eight innings and six overall. Their only baserunner during a five-inning stretch starting in the fourth came when Ed Lucas drew a two-out walk in the seventh. —
